Flawed metallic glasses (MGs) have been becoming prevalent due to their intriguing mechanical and structural properties, but so far no systematic study exists even for the typical and common shape flaw/notch - slit. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we report slit direction and distribution dependence of mechanical performance and deformation behavior in monatomic Tantalum MG. Our work reveals that the MG slab with a perpendicular slit exhibits significantly decreased strength, while a parallel slit only causes a small change. Moreover, by splitting the slit into a number of segments, we observe a ductile-brittle failure transition in the slab with perpendicular slits, while negligible changes in that with parallel slits. The present study not only shows the strength and ductility changes with slit direction and distribution, but also sheds significant insights into the deformation and failure mechanisms of flawed MGs that may offer new strategies for the design of MG structures.
